Women's Rights and Treatment Towards Women
A hundred years ago women could not vote, only men could. Many women fought for the right to vote from the time the civil war ended and it was not granted to them until 1920. Today women play a huge role in politics and how our country is ran. There has been a woman running for vice president and even president. It was not until 1870 that women could keep the money that they had earned. Women for a very long time were always considered the weaker sex compared to men. Maternity, was one of the reasons men long considered women should only work in the home and take care of the children. Now in 2012 women have all the same rights men do, they are allowed to work and vote under the same guidelines as men, and after the Lilly Ledbetter Act should be getting the same pay as men for the work they due. The effect that this had in the early 20th century was women became more aggressive toward getting the rights that they deserved, many groups for women's rights were formed from this . Many people responded to the change in women's rights as a bad thing some people thought that they would be better at home taking care of the children. Others fully supported the changes and even helped with the cause. Today most people are supportive of women's rights because they have been around for a while now, but some people still think women should stay home and take care of the children. Throughout many years the treatment of women has become better. At the turn of the 20th century men could be very violent towards women, but many years later an act call the Violence Against Women Act was created protecting women all around the country. Many women were very happy with this act, giving them a chance to start over if they had become a victim of violence.
